What do you think a 4G network means?
'4G' stands for fourth generation and refers to the latest technologies for mobile voice and data. Each major provider in the United States uses different methods to provide faster speeds of transmitting information on both uploads and downloads.
Before smartphones, speed was less of an issue because the packets of information that needed to travel through the network were smaller. Now that phones are mobile Internet devices, the amount of data is much larger. The time it takes to download apps, music, videos or upload files can be frustratingly slow without an upgraded network.
Data plans are big business for cell providers and they want you to spend more on mobile computing. Consumers have raised their expectations of what they want to be able to do on a mobile phone connection versus a home Internet connection and the standards have to be upgraded.
Not all 4G networks are the same. Wired Magazine explains how each provider uses a different format and they are rolling out their 4G networks at different times. Our region has 4G available with several different providers, but does 4G mean the same performance on each network?
Rootmetrics produced a study (PDF) of performance of the various 4G networks in the Washington area that shows the Verizon LTE network provided much faster and more consistent download and upload speeds.
With 4G clearly being faster, does that mean most smartphone users are going to look for 4G performance? Retrevo surveyed smartphone users about 4G and consumers seem to be confused about its advantages. The data plans are the same price on 3G and 4G networks, but the faster speeds could lead to higher data consumption. The 4G devices have premium pricing with the newest technology, but expect to see some lower prices as more devices are available to buy. The most interesting item from the survey was that many iPhone4 owners believed they had a 4G device (34 percent), but the '4' in this case doesn't mean 4G. Even the rumored soon-to-come iPhone5 isn't likely to have 4G at launch. Whether that will affect purchasing decisions is yet to be seen.
