  • Pros

Stunning cinematics and character models. Has Gears of War 3's cover system. New multiplayer matches and content. Great plot.

  • Cons

Compatibility issues with AMD graphics cards. Minor hiccups from the original games remain intact. A few goofy design elements.

  • Bottom Line

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition for Windows 10 takes a great title and makes it even better. Despite a few small oversights, the updated mechanics and visuals produce the best way to experience the original Gears game—if you have an Nvidia video card.

Gears of War Ultimate Edition Cracked - Download Free PC Game - Skidrow - Kickass Torrent - REPACK BLACKBOX - Steam - MULTI LINKS. ABOUT THE GAME. The story of “Gears of War” thrusts gamers into a deep and harrowing battle for survival against the Locust Horde, a nightmarish race of creatures that surfaced from the bowels of the planet. Gears of War Ultimate Edition review. But despite how good Gears of War still is, Ultimate Edition is making a poor case for venturing into that walled garden. Gears of War is a great game.

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition ($29.99), the first DirectX 12 PC title, almost sets the standard for what a remastered game should offer. The third-person shooter was already a great game when it debuted a decade ago on Xbox 360, but this updated title adds 4K resolution, unlocked frame rates, and content that was once paid DLC. That said, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition isn't perfect; it doesn't work well with AMD GPUs, bugs from the original game are still an issue, and it lacks some of the updated mechanics found in later Gears games. I played the incredibly fun Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on PC (in fact, it only runs on Windows 10-powered computers), but it's also available on Xbox One.

Welcome to Delta
Gears of War takes place on Sera, a planet inhabited by humans and death-dealing, underground-dwelling creatures called Locust. COG, the only active human military force, dispatches the Delta Squad on a last-ditch effort mission to obtain a device called the Resonator that will map The Hollow—the caverns where the Locust live. From there, COG aims to deploy the Lightmass Bomb, which will destroy the heart of the Locust forces inside the Hollow.

Delta Squad consists of playable-character Marcus Fenix, his war-hardened partner (and second player character) Dominic Santiago, and the A.I.-controlled Augustus Cole and Damon Baird. What makes the Gears of War plot so engaging is that it harkens back to classic 1980s action films. The game is filled with macho tough guys, high-octane action, and charged dialogue. Ultimate Edition's opening sequence nails that tone, and instantly hooked me, just as it did a decade ago.

The Game Changer
Like the original game, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition features the once-revolutionary shoot-and-cover mechanic. While in cover, you're able to move seamlessly from structure to structure to avoid danger, or to flank the enemy. Cover has two extra benefits: It lets you recover health and pop-out from behind a structure to push back enemy forces with your gunfire. Moving in and out of cover feels just as satisfying now as it did when Gears debuted.

The weapons at your disposal include the Lancer (an automatic rifle with a chainsaw melee attachment), a Gnasher shotgun, grenades, and a sidearm dubbed the Snub Pistol. You can also equip the powerful Locust weapons that you find strewn about the environment after firefights.

Between the thrilling exchanges, the Active Reload mechanic lets you reload faster and inflict greater damage for a brief period of time—if you can master its activation. You must press the reload button just as the reload meter hovers over a highlighted area of the ammo meter. If you miss your cue, your gun jams and is briefly rendered unusable as your character shuffles to fix it. Active Reload is a clever risk-reward system that adds an extra layer of complexity to the shooting action.

The more damage your character takes, the more the Crimson Omen, a bloody red cog, develops in the middle of the screen. When it's fully defined, your character goes down. Once you're on the ground, you have two options: a teammate can revive you or an enemy can kill you. Thankfully, an addition to the original Gears of War's gameplay may result in fewer instances of the Crimson Omen.

The cover mechanic has been reconfigured to resemble the one in Gears of War 3, which means that you can revive players while in cover. This is a tremendous benefit when you're under heavy fire. Unfortunately, one mechanic that wasn't carried over from Gears 3 is the ability to damage enemies who are taking cover behind structures you vault over. I attempted to kill a foe while leaping over a cover item and paid dearly.

In addition, some glitches found in the original Gears of War live on in this remasted version. Enemies and teammates sometimes freeze in place, and there's a glitch that renders the final boss a complete pushover. Although these are minor gripes, it's a shame these old bugs still exist.

COGS in the Wheel
Campaign Mode has five acts, along with five chapters only available in the original PC port, that can be played alone or with a friend. The second player takes control of Dom, which is how I recommend playing, since your A.I. buddies tend to be useless and relatively stupid, much like in the original game. On one occasion, I watched A.I. Dom walk circles around an enemy and get blasted.

While the remastered cinematic scenes and character models look amazing, the environments look a bit dated, especially in the early acts of the campaign. However, there are moments later in the underground segments where environments are so stunning that it's hard to believe this title debuted early in the last console generation's lifespan.

On the other hand, revisiting the first game in a series that has polished and refined itself in later installments highlights the moments when you can see the series' stumbles before it found its footing. There are segments that break away from the action to experiment with the mundane, whether it be leading a blind, giant, one-hit kill Berserker through an area using audio cues or an environmental puzzle on unstable wooden floors that break and drop you into a pit if you walk in an incorrect pattern. More often than not, these awkward interactions take away from the otherwise stellar game design.

Multiplayer consists of six modes, including Deathmatch, King of the Hill, and others from Gears of Wars' sequels. The original game is well-represented with the Warzone, Assassination, and Annex modes. There are also new Ultimate Edition-exclusive modes, such as the 2v2 Gnasher game with no respawns, and Blitz, a modified take on King of the Hill. All the maps from the original Gears of War, the original PC port, and the DLC add-ons are included in this robust package. You're also able to play as 11 characters from Gears of Wars' sequels and have a vast assortment of weapon skins to choose from. Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is by far the greatest way to experience the original Gears multiplayer.

Graphics, Specs, and Issues
Gears of War: Ultimate Edition has a few bugs, but the bigger issue is the game's problems with AMD Radeon GPUs that result in bad graphics and horrible frame rates. Although Microsoft has acknowledged that it's working on a driver solution with AMD, this does not excuse such an inexplicable screw up, and it certainly doesn't help fans warm up to Microsoft's new push for high-profile Xbox titles making their way to Windows 10. Even worse, the game is one of Microsoft's Universal Windows Apps, a walled off piece of software that currently can't be modded by the community. Owners of AMD GPUs shouldn't expect assistance from fellow fans any time soon.

On the flip side, rigs with Nvidia GeForce GPUs under the hood should have little issue running this game. The recommended specs include an Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 GPU and Intel Core i5/AMD FX 6-core CPU, but I was able to play on my GTX 960-powered PC by turning off anti-aliasing. My rig produced a smooth 55 frames per second gameplay. Ultimate Edition can be played at 4K resolution and unlocked refresh rates. You can tweak Shadow Quality, Motion Blur, Ambient Occlusion, and Texture Quality.

Keep Gunning
Despite my gripes, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is a thoroughly entertaining game—if you have an Nvidia GeForce GPU in your PC. Its gunplay, cover system, and creative level design more than outweigh many of the returning negatives. Barring the game's issues with AMD graphics cards, there's no reason why Gears fans shouldn't purchase this remastered classic.

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition (for PC)

Bottom Line: Gears of War: Ultimate Edition for Windows 10 takes a great title and makes it even better. Despite a few small oversights, the updated mechanics and visuals produce the best way to experience the original Gears game—if you have an Nvidia video card.
